Screen Shot 2014-06-17 at 9.36.28 PM

When I ran the Race 4 Every Child 5k last year, in support of  Children’s National Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Foundation, I was hoping to inspire some dads to do the same. Special thanks to DC Life Magazine for the coverage, maybe it will excite folks about the run coming up in September.

Fatherhood Friday Teachable Moments

Chess quote

“I believe what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren’t trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom.”Umberto Eco

There are so many teachable moments throughout the day as a father when you are with your kids. Don’t take those moments for granted. It doesn’t have to be a large production or a “sit down child, I have something to teach you” moment. It could happen when you look at the waiter directly, speak clearly and say, “thank you, sir.”  Sometimes it will be telling your kids what not to do, but often times it is showing how you do things through your actions. They see all, so make sure you acknowledge that by showing them what is right and talking to them about it.

I was recently interviewing reality TV star and entrepreneur Bevy Smith for another publication and we got on the topic of dads. She explained how her dad was the primary caregiver because her mom worked late on weekdays. Her dad cooked every week night and made sure the kids were taken care of during the week. Bevy gets her strength and optimism from her dad being in her life, she shared.

“There is something about a girl who knows there is a man who loves her and something about a boy growing up under the shadow and tutelage of a man.”Bevy Smith

She said how she recently realized how those moments when her dad would fill her time with geography facts led to her extreme love of travel. She now gets to travel the world and everywhere she goes a piece of him travels with her, and she is quick to call him during and after trips.  She commends fathers taking an active role in raising their children.

6 Ways Dads Can Help the Earth

Earth-Day-2014

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.  Earth Day is here and it’s time to think about our eco-system and consider how we can help.  The Greenhouse Effect is in full effect!  Changing seasons seem to have less to do with the weather and more to do with another day on the calendar.  We have to do our part.

Here are 6 ways Cool Dads can help the environment and resize their own carbon footprint:

1. Go Unplugged

Save on that electrical bill by saving energy and brain cells spending a few evenings a week unplugged.  Have the entire family cut off (and unplug) televisions, computers, cell phones, games and etc. Talk to one another and learn about what’s going on in each other’s lives that might otherwise be drowned in the sea of social media and wack cartoons.

2. Thrift Shop

Buying items second hand is a great way to save money and reduce waste.  Another man’s trash is another man’s treasure.  I donate items to Good Will or Salvation Army and shop there as well.  Your kids likely have plenty of great stuff they don’t need or use anymore but instead of making waste,  give it to st_Dad-n-Sonbe reused.

3. Recycle

Make sure you know what items can be recycled and separate them so they can be recycled. This is a great practice to enstill in our kids.  When my kids go to other people’s houses they if their is a recycle bin before they toss anything in the trash.

4. Buy Local

Visit your local farmer’s market where you can to purchase locally raised and organic dairy, eggs, meat and more. The food eco-friendly, fresh and buying it stimulates the local economy. Plus, local food tastes better and is fresher.

5.  Other Means of Transportation

If you have two feet, you have a means of transportation. For short trips to the store and etc., it is a great practice to walk or ride a bike. Not only is it exercise, but it helps save on gas and lower your carbon emissions.  Also consider car pooling on different outings or to work.

6. Cloth Diapers?

Yes, they still make cloth diapers and if you were really about that “Green” life and a dad that uses diapers you would invest in some instead of pilling those weird thick globs of napkin and tap in the trash can.  As many of us know the cost of disposable diapers is like baby college tuition when you add it all up.  Also you go through so many little accidents that it would be more than worth it to be able to wash those diapers out.  My parents did it.

Side Note: I was going to include ebooks and reading online but there is something about the feel of a book and the way we pass knowledge in the physical form that has always excited me. I still buy and read books.  I may be old fashioned but I remain COOL!  #DADsRule

QOTD To Be Loved?

As men, we grow up loved by our moms and then taught that it is a weakness to require that validation from our women. As dads, our kids have no hesitation sharing love and validating it.  I know personally, I like to get things without asking.

For many of us in relationships, we tend not to ask, “Do you love me?” But we notice when it’s not being said to us.  We know women love to hear it.  Truth be told, so do we. We need to be loved too!

to be loved

To be loved, to be loved. Oh, what feeling to be loved!

#DadsRule Question of the Day

Is being told you are loved important? Even if you don’t ask for it, would you like your significant other to validate how she feels about you.

College Hoops on Deck!

First and foremost, #SALUTE all the women and men affiliated with our Armed Forces. We celebrate you and even though you are the reason my kid’s have no school today … Still, I salute you.

TONIGHT our Armed Forces and the NCAA make history and me happy with the first basketball game played on an aircraft carrier.  The North Carolina Tarheels and Michigan State Spartans square off on the flight deck of the 1,094 feet long aircraft carrier the USS Carl Vinson. ESPN 7pm EST

The same ship that dunked Osama Bin Laden in the ocean hosts hoops war on the high seas.  President Obama and James Worthy will be in attendance. LET’S GO!  I LOVE college basketball.  I Love AMERICA!

Find New Balance

One way to keep on top of your game is to stay balanced. With so many distractions, it’s easy to get sidetracked and lose sight of your DaddysCool between the rat race and everything being all about the kids.

#DADsRule Find New Balance. Find time for what makes you happy.

Yo Gabba Yo!

This Friday Nick Jr’s popular live action/ weird human-sized puppet show, Yo Gabba Gabba!, comes to life for kids of all ages in the DC area at the Patriot Center in Virginia.  The event is presented by Kia Motors and since they have presented me with tickets … It’s time to dance!  For my old school Hip-Hoppers, Biz Markie (who I have always considered a puppet like character) is also part of the show.  The kids are pumped. You might not want to wait for my review of the show to get tickets, because it’s only in the area one night, Sept. 30.  If you are wondering when or if it is coming your way check the schedule of the tour at Yo Gabba Gabba!
