Pantene Shows NFL Dads Doing Hair and It’s Adorable

Screen Shot 2016-02-04 at 6.05.52 AM

Last year, during Super Bowl week companies swung hard and heavy at dads, which was really cool. Pantene has struck an early chord showcasing NFL dads doing their daughters hair in a collection of cute short videos. The Pittsburg Steelers’ DeAngelo Williams, Dallas Cowboys’ Jason Witten and New Orleans Saints’ Benjamin Watson show a sweet Cool Dad side connecting with their princesses. Each dad tackles their kid’s hair in their own way and Pantene adds visual play-by-play that injects humor while staying on topic with hair products and football references. Brilliant!

Below are the videos that have been posted so far from cutest to cute, enjoy:

RIP Darryl Dawkins Fatherhood Friday

Screen Shot 2015-08-28 at 11.08.35 AM

Yesterday, we lost one of our legendary figures in professional basketball, Darryl Dawkins. A man that became a legend for rattling backboards until they shattered. A man that would be known as “Chocolate Thunder,” after Stevie Wonder felt the vibrations from one of his slam dunks and nicknamed him. Famous for the slam dunks he would name: “The If-You-Ain’t-Groovin’, Best-Get-Movin’, Chocolate-Thunder-Flyin’, Robinzine-Cryin’, Teeth-Shakin’, Glass-Breakin’, Rump-Roastin’, Bun-Toastin’, Glass-Still Flyin’, Wham-Bam-I-Am-Jam.”

Darryl Dawkins would  play 14 years in the NBA and although he would marry four times he stayed a cool dad to his children, it seems.  He died at 58 from a heart attack, according to reports.  He leaves behind three children in Alexis, Nick and Tabitha Dawkins.

Fatherhood Friday Legacy with Allan Houston

Screen Shot 2015-06-05 at 4.36.40 PMEx-New York Knick and NBA All-Star Allan Houston is a father of seven children, so, for him, fatherhood is not a game.  The former player, recently unveiled the trailer for his documentary, “The Legacy of My Father.”  The film features a few familiar faces including Doc Rivers, the only NBA head coach to coach his son on a team.  Our interest is piqued. Watch the trailer for yourself. #DadsRule #FatherhoodFriday

Mayweather on Fatherhood and Mike Tyson Calls him Scared

Screen Shot 2015-05-01 at 11.13.51 AM

There is a lot of information swirling around about the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight this Saturday, but there are a few stories that stood out to me as a dad.

First, Mayweather stating that all the money from the fight will go to his four children.  Mayweather is expected to collect $200 million and says he will give $50 million to each child. I think that is great, if he does that, as his legacy with his children and establishing wealth for future generations are very important when all is said and done.

Second thing I noticed in an interview when asked about his children, Mayweather said he wishes he could see all his children, but because of his abusive history with one of the mothers of his children he can’t.  He was verbally and visibly saddened by it, then responds with, “But you know how women are.”  Although, I didn’t like what he said I expected no less because, you know how men that beat women are.

Tyson-Mayweather

Speaking of which … the last and most entertaining piece for me was Mike Tyson.  Tyson was cornered in a casino and asked his prediction on the fight and his perception of Floyd Mayweather, Jr.  His remarks were classic. Tyson calls Mayweather, “a scared little man,” and it has nothing to do with boxing.

“He can’t take his kids to school by himself and he is talking about he is great?”  – Mike Tyson

Fatherhood Friday Smart Move

Screen Shot 2015-04-03 at 9.05.04 AM

Shaka Smart leaves Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) to take over the head coaching job at Texas University.  The cool dad and media darling will finally cash in and get all the spoils that come from coaching a big named program.

Should he have waited for a position at a school with a better basketball tradition? Should he have waited one more year to field offers?  Could he have gone to a school who’s fans and athletic director are likely more forgiving to a first year losing season, if that were to occur?

The answer to all these questions are, “maybe.”  As it stands the young coach will make about $18 million.  I know money isn’t everything, but when you have a family and an opportunity like this presents itself, it makes the decision easier to run a fast break to the bank.  Money aside, he had taken VCU as far it it could go and it is time to see what he can do with real resources at his disposal.

I wish Shaka all the success in the world and know he is up to the challenge. #FatherhoodFriday salute! #DadsRule

Jordan Gets His Hare Back

bigs2

This weekend Brand Jordan reunites Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny releasing the new  Air Jordan 1 Mid “Hare” and the Air Jordan 1 Mid Lola sneakers (April 4). You may remember when the Space Jam movie took over the airwaves and movie screens as the film grabbed the public’s attention and slam dunked it in the bank.

I let my kids watch the movie a year ago and they still enjoyed it; the mix of sports, comedy and music in a cartoon with classic Warner Bros characters is undeniable.  My son mentioned that he would like to see  a Space Jam sequel, when I showed him the new shoes.

Check out this new SportsCenter inspired cup of Hare Jordan:

By the way, If you are remotely a sneaker head you will  also remember the “Hare” 7s. No worries, they plan on releasing them this summer but be prepared to stand in a cartoonish line or pay high ACME prices the internet, the demand will be high.

For now there are these …

Fatherhood Friday Still Strong

Screen Shot 2015-03-27 at 11.39.26 AM

This week, NFL player Devon Still got the amazing news that his 4-year old daughter, Leah, diagnosed with pediatric cancer, was now cancer free!  We salute young, strong and cool dad Still this Fatherhood Friday.

When he got the good news, he finally re-signed with the team that allowed him to stay on the practice squad with health insurance supporting his daughter’s struggle.  Still signed  a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals..  He vowed not to play while his daughter fought cancer and now he plans to put attention towards the game and his daughter.

“I just felt numb,” Still said. “It was hard to believe especially with how bad the disease was spread throughout her body before. We were definitely hoping to hear that the treatment worked and tell us it digressed, but to say they didn’t see anything in her body the whole thing was shocking.”

Screen Shot 2015-03-27 at 12.31.54 PM

“When I look at my daughter all I can do is smile and hug her. It was not easy but every day, and every treatment, Leah fought like hell and kicked cancers butt! I’m so proud and blessed to call her my daughter. She has made an impact on me and on the world, at the age of four, that I can only wish to make in a lifetime.” -Devon Still

Manute Bol’s Son to Take his Father’s Game to New Height

Screen Shot 2015-03-04 at 1.31.11 PM

Meet Bol Bol, son of former NBA player Manute Bol.  Bol is more than following the massive footprints of  his 7ft 7in tall (now deceased) dad; this 15 year-old is already 6 ft 10 in and shows the mobility of Kevin Durant.

Bol’s dad died in 2010. The death hit him hard, but became his motivation to focus more on basketball to help get through his loss. He wants to complete his dads dream making it to the NBA, taking care of the people of Sudan but not spending the bulk of his money on the cause like his dad did, rather saving money to take care of himself and his immediate family.

“When people say every game I play is for my dad, it makes me feel good; makes me work harder”

Bol is just getting started.

Fatherhood is Changing the Game for Tiger Woods

BvFgdgr

Tiger Woods has been going through golf course-sized criticism on his game or lack there of, and some doubt he will ever return to his No. 1 ranking. His former caddy, Sean Foley, thinks that the fatherhood has replaced golf as the number one thing is Tiger’s life. He is the father of Sam Alexis Woods, Charlie Axel Woods.  ]

In a recent interview with The New York Post, it is clear what is important to him:

“I would say I practice much less now,” Tiger said.  “I want to spend as much time as I can with my kids. I have split custody, so when I’m home, I want to be home with them, take them to a soccer game or to school or to activities. I’m their dad.”

Tiger is in the history books and he has left his mark on the world.  Now it is important to leave his mark on his legacy as a father.  The public’s need and desire for him to be the best golfer means little next to what his kid’s think of him.  #DadsRule

“If you win a tournament, it feels good, but you go home and your kid takes a bee-line at you and jumps in your arms, that just feels better … to watch (Tiger) with his kids, he’s easily one of the most patient fathers I have ever seen,”- Scott Foley

DadsRule Super Bowl Commercials 2015

I want to talk about how excited and proud I felt seeing cool dads put on such a pedestal in the Super Bowl 49 commercials.  A great display of what it means to a father and on one of the largest stages with billions of people watching.  Even more than watching, people really pay attention to these commercials.

Now that I am over the shock and disappointment of not seeing Beast Mode take the Seahawks to a second championship, I can revel a bit in the other things I saw last night.

First, Toyota’s “Bold Dad” commercial which was a touching display of how bold a dad innately becomes and why. #oneBoldChoice

Toyota jumped in again with “One Bold Choice To Be A Dad” showcasing former and current NFL player giving powerful testimonies about their dads and fatherhood … #OneBoldChoice

Next, Nissan who decided to introduce the world to their newly redesigned flagship, Maxima, in a heartwarming commercial about a hard-driving father (literally)that keeps his family in the forefront while his son grows up before us wanting to be like dad. They meet up at the end for an embrace of love and understanding. #WithDad

Last but not least Dove Men+Care “Real Strength” ad, which we reviewed on this site … #RealStrength WATCH HERE

One commercial that depressed a lot a people, especially this dad, was the uncomfortable Nationwide Insurance commercial about a child dying in an accident. Not for the Super Bowl, but I guess they do have people talking about it which is the goal … I suppose.

NCAA to Give Money to Families of Championship Athletes

LSU v Auburn

After nearly a century of collecting a fat pay check from TV endorsements and ticket sales for Final Four and championship games, the NCAA has agreed to reimburse the parents of student-athletes who travel to these games to watch their children play moving forward.

For men’s and women’s Final Four teams, the NCAA will pay up to $3,000 total for travel, hotel and meal expenses for student-athletes’ families to attend games. Championship game participants will receive $4,000.  The new College Football Playoff may provide up to $3,000 in expenses for families of each competing student-athlete.

Good news for cool dads of college athletes and their families!

Cool Dad ESPN’s Stuart Scott Dies

RIP ESPN’s Stuart Scott!

ESPN’s legendary Sportscenter sportscaster, Cancer fighter and cool dad, Stuart Scott passed away today. He was 49 and leaves two daughters behind.

Read our DaddysCool piece on Stu … Kicking Cancers Ass

“You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and the manner in which you live. So live. Fight like hell, and when you get too tired to fight, lay down and rest and let someone else fight for you.” –  Stuart Scott

New York Times Obituary

TY Hilton New Daddy TD Celebration

Indianapolis Colts star wide receiver TY Hilton was up late the night before a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he was on his feet all night and showed up late to the field this past Sunday.  He wasn’t out partying, he was witnessing the birth of his first daughter and rocking her in his arms until 6am that morning. He promised the newborn that he would score a touchdown for her and bring her the game ball.

So, on very little sleep and barely anything to eat, he arrived ready to play and did just as he promised. Overcome with emotions, he quieted the crowd following his touchdown catch and cradled the ball in his arms as if he was rocking his new daughter to sleep in the endzone.  #DadsRule

Superman vs Lobo: College Dad Balls Hard for Son

deshawn s v l

Sometimes being a dad comes down to being a hero or a wolf, in many minds.  Deshawn Delany chose to be both and has a great reason.  Delaney is an All-star basketball player for the University of New Mexico Lobos with the goal of balling hard enough to make it to the NBA and save his 4-year old from the perils of his Chicago (ChIRAQ) neighborhood. Delaney had to leave his son to pursue a dream of a better life.

“It was very hard not seeing him every day. Still is,” Delaney said of his son. “But this is my way of feeding him and providing for him. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here right now.”

delaney
As a junior in high school he was on his way to flunking out, until he found out he would soon be a teen.  His son changed his character and drive on and off the court. He would get his diploma and go on the junior college before being a wolf on the court for the University of New Mexico.

NMLobos

Delaney grew up without a father but longed for a father figure in his life.  He plans to be that super man to his son that he never had in a dad. The men that Delaney looked up to were his basketball coaches.

“I want to be a coach one day,” Delaney said. “I want to coach my son, one day like Craig Neal is with Cullen Neal. I want that.

unm bbx practice

“I love seeing it. Everyday I tell Cullen he’s blessed to have that – to have a father like that. Not too many people have a dad like that. He’s got support. His dad cares about him. Even when his dad gets on him, I tell him to just take it. If he didn’t care about you, there’d be none of that.”

Now as a highly touted senior, Delaney hopes to have a breakout season to help ensure that he can be all that he dreams of for his son.

“Hopefully I don’t go back to Chicago, ever,” Delaney said. “I just want to move my mom and my son out of there.” His Instagram is a reminder “A FATHER B4 IM ANYTHING.”  We salute this Lobo! #DadsRule

Tim Howard: World Cup Cool Dad

With a tattoo of Jesus on his bicep and his son, Jacob and daughter, Alivia, over his heart, Tim Howard may be the coolest dad to be bounced out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Adding to his awesomeness, the USA goalie was flying in every direction in front of the net to  a count of 16 saves, more saves than ever recorded since the stat has been around.

Tim Howard, your country salutes you and most importantly, Daddy’s Cool salutes you!  You are a historic soccer hero now.  Go home and kick it with your kids.  #DadsRule
