Do We Protect Our Kids or Do They Protect Us?

Screen Shot 2015-12-11 at 3.27.11 PMThis weekend Chris Hemsworth drops in theaters this week with the Ron Howard directed “In the Heart of the Sea,” and also dropped some serious knowledge on the relationship of parents and children with a most important revelation while riding in the back seat with his 3 year-old daughter.

Check out his story below:

“Last week, we were in the car driving somewhere, and my little girl was in the back seat with me. I was really tired, and I leaned over and I put my head on her lap, without even thinking about it. I just wanted to lie down a little bit and sleep because it was a 40-minute drive. And she started patting my head and singing a song through her pacifier.  I don’t even know what song it was. . .I looked at my wife, who was in the front seat, and she had tears in her eyes.”

“There’s the idea that we as parents spend all this time protecting our children. No, I think they’re protecting us. Sitting in the car with my head on her lap and her singing to me, there was this understanding of, ‘Wow, she’s looking after Dad, and that’s her job.’ You know? And that was such a joy. Oh, there’s nothing better! It was the happiest moment of my life.” – Chris Hemsworth

What do you think? Especially for those of us with young kids but it rings true for our older kids or even us as kids of a mother and father.  Is it the kids job to protect the parent?

It all boils down to the simple fact that as much as we think about or talk about how our job as a parent is to protect our kids, they actually protect us as well.  My kids (9 and 11 years old) are some of the most caring and nurturing human beings I know.  They know when I am sad or hurt and they go into protection and care mode.  They tell me they love me all the time. There were times when I could not have made it without them as a single dad and there are times they give me the strength to try harder to be a better husband and father now.  They take care of daddy always.  I hopefully when they are older and I don’t have to care for them as much, they will still have it in them to look out for daddy.

To the parents in the trenches, I think our young kids protect us as much as we protect them.

Salute you, Chris Hemsworth.  #DadsRule #FatherhoodFriday

Zuckerberg Becomes Dad and Gives Away $45b for Generations to Come

mark_zuckerberg_and_priscilla_chan_announce_baby_girl_promise_to_give_away_their_facebook_fortune_251720267.png_resized_600.jpg

This week Facebook mogul Mark Zuckerberg “Facebooked” the birth of his first born, Maxima Chan Zuckerberg posting a lengthy letter on his Facebook account addressed to Max.  The letter explains how he wants his daughter “to grow up in a world better than ours today,” and how he and his wife plan on assisting in changing the world.

The change begins with giving up 99 percent of his shares in Facebook, currently valued at $45 billion, to “advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation.” The shares will not go to a non profit but instead a corporation, Chan Zuckerberg, LLC.  In this way Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are not exempt from taxes but are also not tied down by non profit restrictions and  can reinvest in other ventures to generate new money for the initiative. This way the money can keep circulating to non profits and causes they see fit to support, according to Zuckerberg

Zuckerberg ends the letter to his daughter with the following:

“Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children. We wish you a life filled with the same love, hope and joy you give us. We can’t wait to see what you bring to this world.
Love,
Mom and Dad”

Zuckerberg, being the cool dad that he is, is throwing himself into fatherhood taking two months paternity leave from his social media presidency.  We salute you as a new father and giving philanthropist!  #DadsRule #FatherhoodFriday

“I became a father at the age of 19. Now, at that age along with a definite lack of maturity you can only do two things when it comes to being a father. One, rise to the occasion and sacrifice for the safety and stability of your child. Or two, fail miserably.”

“My responsibility is to send decent human beings out into society.” – Xzibit

He welcomed a daughter in August and had this to say about fatherhood:

“It’s wonderful and it makes me really happy.

Fatherhood Friday Funniest Dad Quote, Thanks Ryan Reynolds

Screen Shot 2015-07-31 at 1.10.15 PMDads say the darndest things.  The star of the upcoming Marvel blockbuster, Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds just made my day. The actor and recent father of a beautiful baby girl with actress Blake Lively, named James. What?  My daughter’s name is Michal (pronounced Michael), so say something – LOL.

Okay, I will share a few fatherhood quotes from Reynolds. I died after the first one.

“I used to say to her (MY WIFE), ‘I would take a bullet for you. I could never love anything as much as I love you.’ And then the second I looked in that baby’s eyes, I knew in that exact moment, if we were ever under attack, I would use my wife as a human shield to protect that baby.”

“Everyone thinks their baby is a genius. People find it delightfully refreshing when I tell them, ‘My baby? Totally average. Like, 100 percent average.'”

“If anything else woke up every 45 minutes during the night demanding to see my wife’s breasts, you kill it. [But with] a baby, you’re like, ‘Wahoo!'”

“It’s amazing that you can be that exhausted and that happy at the same time.”

Fatherhood Friday Novak Djokovic

Screen Shot 2015-07-24 at 12.57.44 PM

“Ever since I got married and became a father, I haven’t lost many matches, I won many tournaments. I suggest that to every player, get married, have kids, let’s enjoy this.”

Novak Djokovic recently hoisted the Wimbledon trophy with a victory over pro tennis great, Roger Federer.  The 28-year old Serbian credits that win and various other wins to fatherhood.  Cool dads can get into that train of thought!  #DadsRule #FatherhoodFriday

FACT since his son’s birth: He has lost only three of 61 matches and collected eight titles, including the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

“If there is one thing that I learned it is to recover fast and to leave things behind me and move on.” – Djokovic explains that fatherhood has helped with that.

Today, we shout out former Baltimore Raven and new San Francisco 49er wide receiver, Torrey Smith.  The Maryland native has move on from his hometown, but his family is traveling too. He is big on being a dad and we salute him. #FatherhoodFriday #DadsRule

torreysmith2

I take a lot of pride in being a great father. With that, every decision I make today, I understand that affects him. I take a lot of pride in going about that the right way and I’m someone he’ll look up to.

My thing is, I want to be the best man I can be, when I preach to my child certain things – what to do, what not to do, just the right thing in general – he’ll respect it, because I lived it and I walked it. That’s what I’m trying to do right now. – Torrey Smith

Fatherhood Friday Chris Brown

“Being a father is great. I’ve been able to set aside my own wants and necessities for my daughter.  Everything is about her.” – Chris Brown

Fatherhood Friday Avengers Dad Jeremy Renner

Screen Shot 2015-05-01 at 8.49.51 AM

Today, on the heels on arguably the biggest film release in the world, we salute “Avengers: Age of Ultron” star Jeremy Renner. Cool dad to 2-year-old Ava Berlin, Jeremy remarked recently on the Ellen Show about how much being a dad has changed the 44-year-old.

“Daddy’s my best role to date, I think.”

“It’s kind of screwed my career in a lot of ways, because I don’t really care about it so much because I care about her so much.”

“I still work, probably even more. It used to be all for myself, so I’m not old and broke. All these things I still do, but I do it now for the future of my baby, and if it gets in the way of her well-being, then I stop.” – Jeremy Renner

Fatherhood Friday Anthony Anderson

Screen Shot 2015-04-17 at 1.37.49 PM

We salute Anthony Anderson, cool husband, cool dad of two teens and   star of  ABC’s “Black-Ish,” which returned to the small screen this week.  Anderson is one of the hardest working men in show business but is careful to make sure he is a constant in his children’s lives.  His son is taking a crack at acting and one of Anderson’s fondest memories was when his son chose to join him on stage one Father’s Day and tell “Yo, mama” jokes.

When asked what he liked most about fatherhood:

“Both my children being there, and that being a crowning achievement in my life, and it actually made me feel invincible … I can live forever now.

About his wife and stay-at-home parents:

“What she does as a stay-at-home mom, just like all the other stay-at-home moms and dads across the country is invaluable and unquantifiable … it’s the ultimate sacrifice, what these stay-at-home mothers and fathers do.

Screen Shot 2015-04-10 at 12.03.13 PM

“[Paul] went into fatherhood a lot earlier than I did. He took on that role of kind of being the guide into fatherhood for me. It’s kind of beautiful.”

Fatherhood Friday Still Strong

Screen Shot 2015-03-27 at 11.39.26 AM

This week, NFL player Devon Still got the amazing news that his 4-year old daughter, Leah, diagnosed with pediatric cancer, was now cancer free!  We salute young, strong and cool dad Still this Fatherhood Friday.

When he got the good news, he finally re-signed with the team that allowed him to stay on the practice squad with health insurance supporting his daughter’s struggle.  Still signed  a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals..  He vowed not to play while his daughter fought cancer and now he plans to put attention towards the game and his daughter.

“I just felt numb,” Still said. “It was hard to believe especially with how bad the disease was spread throughout her body before. We were definitely hoping to hear that the treatment worked and tell us it digressed, but to say they didn’t see anything in her body the whole thing was shocking.”

Screen Shot 2015-03-27 at 12.31.54 PM

“When I look at my daughter all I can do is smile and hug her. It was not easy but every day, and every treatment, Leah fought like hell and kicked cancers butt! I’m so proud and blessed to call her my daughter. She has made an impact on me and on the world, at the age of four, that I can only wish to make in a lifetime.” -Devon Still
