Virginia Wine Festival Turns 40

Screen Shot 2015-09-13 at 8.38.16 AM

The weather yesterday in the DC area was suspect at best. Today, if you are in the area, don’t miss the 40th Annual Virginia Wine Festival sponsored by Across The Way Productions.  Stock up, sip and have an all around good time at the longest running wine festival on the east coast. If you have never been get ready to be impressed by 30+ wineries and their offerings.

Tickets are still available; $35 gets you in the gate and all the wine tastings you can stand … literally. There is food but normally nothing not as impressive as the wine.  Bring your blankets and dress for the cool breeze.  #VAWine  11am-5pm  The Plains, VAScreen Shot 2015-09-13 at 8.26.44 AM

Fit Fathers Day Whips Families into Shape

Father and son at #FitFathersDay

Group exercise routines, dancing, double dutch teams, fitness contests, smiles and laughter accurately depicts what took place at the 2nd Annual Fit Fathers Day (FFD) celebration. Typical Father’s Day ideas consist of brunches or cookouts so the Fit Fathers team decided to shake things up a bit. We brought the celebration back to Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring, MD from 10 am to Noon, still leaving time for families to go along with their regularly scheduled plans. Fit Fathers, DaddysCool.com and Powerful Beyond Measure came together to show fathers the importance of being health conscious and leading by example through positive, nutritional choices. The Fit Fathers Foundation believes health, fitness and nutrition can help fathers live longer and challenges all dads to eat clean, stay active and continuously energize their lives!

IMG_5835

Ladies plank contest winner and family

An energetic Social Workout was led by Fit Fathers’ founder Kimatni Rawlins, celebrity trainer Michael Bance and 12-year-old fitness guru Jodi Evans, while DJ Blinks mixed sounds behind a stellar Bose audio system to keep everyone entertained. A special 80s and 90s music mix was put together for our special Terminator Genisys movie workout. Movie posters, premiere tickets and t-shirts were given to the FFD attendees. With fitness contests, family workout and activities, inflatable obstacle course, healthy snacks, health screenings, gift bags and demonstrations, this Father’s Day event had something for everyone. Another highlight was the timed fitness course that crowned James Swink Mr. Fit Father 2015. He won four Yokohama tires as the grand prize.

Fit Fathers Day was made possible through the support of Mazda, Volkswagen, Children’s National, Wegmans, The Washington Auto Show, DC Capital Striders and City Sports. The event also highlighted the amazing work of our community and media partners including: LoveLife Foundation, 14th Legislative District (Montgomery County), Action for Healthy Kids, African American Health Program, Aspire Beverages, Automotive Rhythms, Bance Fitness, Creative Edge PR, African American Health Program, Embrace Kids, Fathers Incorporated, Fit For Life, Greenbelt S.I.T.Y. Stars, Healthyblackmen.org, Kids Being Fit, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (Dr. Neal Barnard), Men’s Health Network, Mocha Moms, National Black Child Development Institute, Kids Being Fit, Shoe City, SOULCYCLE, Streets Wize Foundation, Strive 2 Tri, The Boot Camp Girl, Throttle Life, Vegan Pro, Meatless Monday, Montgomery County, MD Dept. of Police, Center for Nutrition Studies and Washington Sports Club.

Also, NFL players Jason McCourty of the Tennessee Titans and Adrian Coxson of the GreenIMG_5772 Bay Packers, who attended the celebration, served as Fit Fathers’ National Ambassadors for the momentous occasion.

We thanked attendees for supporting our cause with prizes and giveaways courtesy of Aspire Beverages, City Sports, SOULCYCLE, Bose Audio, Under Armor, Shoe City and Mothers car care. Through social media and the use of the hashtag #FitFathersDay appearing across multiple newsfeeds, there is already an air of anticipation for Fit Fathers Day 2016. We greatly appreciate our sponsors and partners who recognized the vision and helped bring FFD to fruition. A very special thank you is in order for all the patrons and volunteers.

Although Fit Fathers Day is a special occasion to recognize dads during their time of celebration, our mission is to also become active with, moms, kids and families throughout the year. Stay tuned for more Fit Fathers events as we move forward to engage with different communities around the country. Enjoy the photo gallery.

As always, seats are first-come, first-served so people should arrive early to make sure they get seats.

Synopsis:  Academy Award® nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014.  Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz).  But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in.  Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.

$100,000 Makeover and Hi Tech Initiative for Boys & Girls Clubs Through Comcast

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington recently partnered with Comcast NBCUniversal to launch its new technology initiative to help bridge the digital divide in urban areas called “My.Furture.”  The Comcast Foundation provided Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington with $100,000 for computers, tablets, Smart Boards, digital cameras, music studio tools and video-editing technology, as well as  on-site renovations, including new paint, furniture and structural repairs (thanks to renovation manpower of Clark Construction in DC).

My.Future is a program  that allows Club members to select from more than 40 activities that reinforce digital literacy, including areas of exploring the web, communicating with others digitally as well as allowing members to learn robotics, coding and game design.

Comcast BG2

The grand unveiling of the new computer lab and My.Future in Washington, DC  was a rather tame affair with a few executives, a few cameras, DC Council member and one local television personality, but the impact this work will have on the kids will be immeasurable. The renovated Richard England Clubhouse #14 was the Boys & Girls Clubs site chosen to unveil the initiative.   My three children were handpicked to be apart of the press conference. My oldest daughter, Michal, was tasked with demonstrating how to use the large touchscreen SMART Board mounted on the wall, transposing her face on the Statue of Liberty before the attendees.

Comcast BG1

My kids and countless other young people will benefit from the technology upgrades as Clubhouse #14 is one of the busiest Clubs in the area. They are all every excited about having access to so much technology and can’t wait for free time to explore and learn.  As a parent, I am excited also. Not only for my kids, but those less fortunate kids who do not have access to the latest computers or in some cases no computers at all at home.

Additional Clubs in Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco were also renovated as part of the launch. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington President and CEO Pandit Wright was joined at the event by Comcast Vice President of Community Investment and Comcast Foundation President Charisse Lillie, Boys & Girls Clubs of America Senior Vice President and Chief Educational Officer Dr. Damon Williams, Councilwoman Yvette Alexander, President and General Manager of NBC4 Washington Jackie Bradford and NBC4 Washington anchor Aaron Gilchrist to celebrate the launch of the program.

Pinkalicious Musical Review by Michal Zoe

Screen Shot 2014-07-30 at 11.02.39 AM

by Michal Zoe Tucker

Recently, I went to the Adventure Theater Musical Theater Center (ATMTC) located in Glen Echo Park, Maryland with my father and sister to see a musical for the book Pinkalicious, written by Elizabeth Kann. This was my third time going to ATMTC. The first time I saw the musical Three little Birds, based on the song by Bob Marley.  The second time,  I saw the musical/play “Big Nate,” based on one of the books in the Big Nate series by author Lincoln Pierce, who I met at the theater after the show.

The Pinkalicious musical started off with Pinkalicious wanting to eat a cupcake, but her mom didn’t let her and told her to go to bed. The next morning she asked for another cupcake and she couldn’t get one, so a few nights later she snuck to eat a bunch of cupcakes. In the morning, her brother, Peter, woke her up and screamed that she was pink. Her mom took her to the doctors and they said she had “pinkatidis.” And the only way to cure it was to eat green food, and Pinkalicious hated green food!  So, instead of eating vegetables she snuck another cupcake, and when she woke up the next morning she was red.  Later on in the musical, Pinkalicious finally ate green food and turned back to her normal self with the help of her brother Peter. My favorite part was when she went to sleep and there were pink cupcake puppets moving around her head representing her dreams. When we walked out the theater, we got to try on some of the Pinkalicious costumes. Also my dad bought my sister and I a gold crown from the little merchandise store at the front window. It was very fun!
