“(A child is) someone that actually depends on you for everyday living,” Sherman said. “Everything they do is dependent on you and how you provide and how successful you are.

“As a parent, you want to set a great example for them, so I guess, to a degree, a lot of things are riding on it.”

Fatherhood Friday: Real Strong Dad Ad

Not a dry eye in the place after this powerful Dove Men +Care commercial about cool dads. I am starting a petition for this to run during the Super Bowl giving a nod to dads getting it done and encourage deadbeat dads watching the game to get the lead out! #REALStrength #FatherhoodFriday

Fatherhood Quotes from a KING

Today was the birth of a King. Cool dad of 4, husband, God-fearing Civil Rights leader, pastor, superhero, world-changing orator and legend.  Today we salute Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr on his birthday! Fatherhood Quotes from a King-  #DadsRule

On his father -” he never wastes his money at the expense of his family. He has always had sense enough not to live beyond his means.”

Paddington Movie is Furry Funny

kids at paddington

“The Paddington movie is a really good fantasy about a talking bear and how he moves from Peru to London to live with a human family (The Browns),” according to my youngest daughter Nya. “It’s a fantasy because bears really don’t talk in real life,” she said.

The kids and I got a chance to check out the “Paddington” movie before it hits theaters this Friday. I remember the books written by Michael Bond, but my kids hadn’t read any, nor were they familiar with Paddington, as I was.  They still wanted to see the movie from the producer of “Harry Potter” and though we were in a theater full of eager book fans laughing and sighing at every turn in the story, they very much enjoyed it.

I didn’t know how much until after the film, mostly because I could not hear the kids over the adults in the movie having such a good time. As for this cool dad, I enjoyed it.  It doesn’t feel like a kids movie, it has a charm and sophistication to it.  It’s like a smart kid’s “Curious George.”

One scene that stood out for me was when we look at Paddington’s London family’s dad, Mr. Brown, and his former self with long hair blazing a hippie trail on a motorcycle in route to deliver his pregnant wife at the hospital.  ” Something about being a father changes you,” the narrator says as the now stuffy and straight-laced Mr. Brown exits the hospital seconds later. Mr. Brown will see another significant change in his character by movies’ end as he becomes a father again to Paddington Brown.

Even though there is a scene of mischievous rocket science, at its base, this movie is not rocket science.  Although it contains some smart British humor, all is still within reach of young kids.  Check it out, you and your kids will be pleasantly surprised.

My kids thought:

“It is funny and a little emotional. It is a good family movie.”

“The bear was cute and adventurous. The Brown family was nice to him.”

Fatherhood Friday with Scandal

Fatherhood is scary but just think of it as practice, that’s what the “Scandal” TV show star, Scott Foley, does. The 42-year old cool dad and husband recently welcomed his third child and wasn’t afraid to mention how terrified he was. But, no scandal here; he has stepped up to the challenge. It’s what we do. Happy #FatherhoodFriday #DadsRule

“It’s terrifying. It should scare the hell out of you. But it’s amazing. There’s nothing else I can think of that has that juxtaposition of being at once terrifying and the worst thing you can do for your happy life and the best thing you can do for your happy life to make it even better.” – Scott Foley

“I’ve had a ton of practice and I wasn’t sure I wanted any more practice. But I’m so glad I’m practising again. It’s great. With three kids, I spend all my time at home now.” – Scott Foley

NCAA to Give Money to Families of Championship Athletes

LSU v Auburn

After nearly a century of collecting a fat pay check from TV endorsements and ticket sales for Final Four and championship games, the NCAA has agreed to reimburse the parents of student-athletes who travel to these games to watch their children play moving forward.

For men’s and women’s Final Four teams, the NCAA will pay up to $3,000 total for travel, hotel and meal expenses for student-athletes’ families to attend games. Championship game participants will receive $4,000.  The new College Football Playoff may provide up to $3,000 in expenses for families of each competing student-athlete.

Good news for cool dads of college athletes and their families!

Fatherhood Friday LeBron on Kids and Teammates

A funny thing happened in a conversation about how LeBron James interacts with his teammates as a leader, he compared it to fatherhood.   Interesting … #FatherhoodFriday Life raising three kids and teammates. #DadsRule

“There’s no encyclopedia or book about parenthood. You learn on the fly. And, as a parent, if you have multiple kids, you can’t teach them all the same thing because they all have different personalities. They’re their own person. And I understand that. The way I can talk to one of my kids has to be different from the other one, because how they react and how they take in the knowledge is different.

And what’s funny is it’s a lot like being a leader of a basketball team. How I speak to Dwayne Wade is different from how I speak to Chris Bosh. How I speak to Mario Chalmers is different from how I talk to Norris Cole. How I talk to Kyrie Irving is different from how I talk to Kevin Love. It’s how they receive the knowledge and how it processes into their mind—that’s how you know you’re doing it the right way. Being able to understand their personalities, and understand their mind, on how they take the knowledge.” – LeBron James
