Fatherhood Friday Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg, who has four children under the age of 11, takes the cover of the Fatherhood issue of Esquire and drops a few fatherhood gems in the process.  #DADSrule #FatherhoodFriday

“I think the most important thing is to always be involved in every aspect of their life. To give them enough trust that they can share things with you.”

“I don’t want them to be terrified of me, but I don’t want them to think they can do whatever they want and get away with it, either, because they can’t.”

Fatherhood Friday to the Wall

Wizards All Star John Wall was a bit dejected after the loss in the NBA Playoffs to the Indiana Pacers, but one couldn’t help but smile at the two beautiful kids that accompanied him to the podium.  Before the interview began, he kiss his niece as both she and Wall’s nephew sat on his lap. There is nothing like having kids a part of the moments that help define us as men, father figures and role models to them.

Wall is trying to break some chains left by his father John Carroll Wall, who would hemorrhage to death before young Wall in 1999 during a family trip at the age of 52. From age 2 to 8, John Wall’s only quality time with his dad was on weekends as his dad spent the majority of his final 30 years behind bars for robbery and second-degree murder.  He is a father figure and celebrity uncle to the two kids photographed.

Salute John Wall on a GREAT year and an awesome unexpected run in the playoffs for the Wizkids.  Someday when you have your own kids, John Wall, be the father your dad was and the father he couldn’t be.

Black-ish Sitcom Comes to ABC

“Screwing things up is just another part of what it means to be a father. That’s how you learn how to fix things. ”

That line was taken from ABC new upcoming comedy series “Black-ish” starring Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Laurence Fishburne. Finally a little flavor on ABC, let’s see how she goes.  The show revolves around an affluent African-American couple with the father trying to keep hold of his children’s cultural roots while living in the suburbs.

Looks interesting, check it out.

The Mask As Men We Live In

“The three most destructive words that every man receives as a boy is when he is told to BE A MAN.”

“The Mask You Live In” by The Representation Project is a film exploring masculinity in our society.  As father’s this is very important and something we must be cognizant of as we raise young men or even look out for our daughters. I sometimes worry about my son around other boys.  He has been told some discouraging things because he is not in tune with all the music on the radio or video games.  His young manhood has been tested already and he has only 8 years old! As a dad, I get down because he is not as rough as I would like or as rough as I was at his age. But upon some soul-searching  and prayer, I realized that is the wrong attitude to have. There are so many other things to equip him with at this young age.

Watch this video trailer. Very enlightening. Why so many boys seem to be going crazy and some of the ways we help their descent.

Fatherhood Friday Dre Day

Dr. Dre just became the richest man in Hip Hop with the sale of Beats Electronics for $3.2 billion to Apple, which will give him a networth of $800 million. Now if he will only put out another album, he can become Hip Hop’s first billionaire.

A father first, Dre lost one of his sons to a drug overdose but four other children.  Here is what he had to say about kids and being a dad:

“Kids are the ultimate form of motivation. They’re watching. They’re mimicking. They’re an extension of you. So you have to win.” – Dr Dre

“I took a daddy’s boot camp before the birth. I want to be hands-on. I want to get in there, change the diapers, feed, burp, pick out the outfits, everything.”

“Just last week before I left, she [Vivianne] gave me a smile at night and I tell you, just melted my heart,” he said. “Talk about being wrapped around a finger, I am definitely with her.” – Eric Decker
